Solving Fraction Addition
Introduction :
In mathematics a fraction is a part of a whole. For example ½ is a fraction. In this the top number also called numerator tells how many parts we have and bottom number also called denominator tells how many parts the whole number is divided into. (Source from wikipedia)
For example:
` 5 / 6`
Here, The 5 is a numerator and 6 is a denominator.
Types of fraction:
There are three different types of fraction.
The improper fraction have the numerator part is greater than or equal to the denominator part.Numerator > denominator or Numerator = Denominator. Ex: 5/3
The mixed fractions have faction with whole number. Ex: 2 3/5
Solving fraction addition:
Solve: ` 2/ 5` + `5/ 8`
Solution:
Given: `2/5` + `5/8`
Here, Numerators are 2 and 5. Denominators are 5 and 8.
The denominators are not same now we find LCM.
The LCM of 5 and 8 is 40.
`2/5` + `5/8` = `(2(8) + 5(5)) / 40`
= `(16 + 25) / 40`
simplify the above equation we get
= `41 / 40`
Answer: ` 41 / 40` .
Examples of solving fraction addition:
Example 1 for solving fraction addition:
Solve: `4/5` + `6/5`
Solution:
Given: `4/5` +`6/5`
The numerators are 4 and 5
The denominators are 5 and 5
Here denominators are same so 5 is common denominator.
`4/5` +`6/5` = `(4(1) + 6(1)) / 5`
= 4 + `6 / 5`
= `10 / 5`
The simplest number is 2
Therefore the final answer is = 2
Answer: 2.
Example 2 for solving fraction addition
Solve: ` 5/7` + `12/ 6`
Solution:
Given: `5/7` + `12/ 6`
The numerators are 5 and 12.
The denominators are 7 and 6.
Here, the denominators are not same.
So we find common denominator.
The LCM of 7 and 6 is 42
`5/7` + `12/ 6` = `5(6) /42` + `12(7)/42`
= `30/42 ` + `84 / 42`
simplify the above equation we get
= `114 / 42`
Answer = `114/42`
Example 3 for solving fraction addition
Solve: `7/2` + `11/ 5`
Solution:
Given: `7/2 ` + `11/ 5`
The numerators are 7 and 11.
The denominators are 2 and 5.
Here, the denominators are not same.
So we find common denominator.
The LCM of 2 and 5 is 10.
`7/2` + `11/ 5` = `7(5) /10` + `11(2)/10`
=` 35/10` + `22 / 10`
= 3.5 + 2.2
= 5.7
Answer: 5.7.
